Robstown track and field has been absent from the UIL state track meet every year since 2003. That cold streak is now over.

Jazmine Miller, who placed second in the 400-meter dash in last week’s regional meet, is heading to Austin. It is the first time a member of the Robstown track and field team has made it to the state meet in over a decade as well as a female athlete.

“I feel that like all the work that I have done up to this point it paid off,” Miller said.

Perhaps the most impressive part of Miller’s state run, she is just a freshman; a fact of which she is more than aware.

“I think it’s very cool for me to be able to be a freshman and be able to be at this level already.”

She is coached by husband and wife team, Adolfo and Marisela Gonzalez, both of whom have been at Robstown High School for over 15 years. Both have nothing but praise for their young, up and coming runner.

“She’s very coachable, she’s a hard worker, she’s a determined individual and anything we give her she does it,” Marisela Gonzalez said.

Both she and Adolfo have been keeping their eye on Jazmine since she showed off her speed in just the 7th grade. Now just two years later, they once again have their state bound runner whose future is extremely bright.

“Jazmine is a unique athlete,” Adolfo Gonzalez said. “I am not surprised by what she is doing and she is going to have a bright future ahead of herself.”

Miller will attempt to bring home a medal in the state track meet in Austin next Saturday, May 11th.
