CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Ice Rays will not return for the 2020-2021 season.

It will mark the first break in the 22-season history of the franchise.

In an announcement released on Monday, the organization says "in times of turbulence, family comes first."

“After much consideration surrounding the developments of COVID-19, and for the health and safety of our organizational family… we have made the difficult decision to suspend operations for the upcoming 2020-21 season and return for the 2021-22 season."

The Ice Rays are a Tier II junior hockey team that competes in the North American Hockey League, competing in the league’s South Division.

The Ice Rays organization was established in 1998 in the Western Professional Hockey League from 1998-2001. They played in the Central Hockey League from 2001 to 2010 and have played in the NAHL since then.
