“Kick Butt” campaign takes kids to watch on-ice action

Some area middle school students were guests of the American Bank Center today.

More than 6,000 students from across the Coastal Bend got to check out the Corpus Christi IceRays in action as they took on the Shreveport Mudbugs in a special Thursday morning game as part of the M.D. Anderson “Kick Butt” campaign.

One goal of the field trip was to teach children the importance of staying smoke-free, and throughout the game, students were shown anti-smoking messages on the big screen.

“Research has shown, at M.D. Anderson, that kids start trying smoking or start smoking between the ages of 12 and 14, said Gloria Hicks, from the M.D. Anderson board of visitors. “This is the age we are trying to capture. We are going to show them the dangers and hazards of tobacco.”

Educators say the kids had a good time, despite the IceRays 5-3 loss to the Mudbugs.
