Staff at CHRISTUS Spohn South literally helped clear the way for renovations happening at the hospital.

Doctors and nurses were armed with sledgehammers and helped knocked down a wall in the Mother-Baby Unit for the ceremonial demolition.

The upgrades will include a new and expanded VIP birthing suite, a new 24-bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), an updated family waiting room, an an updated infant security system.

CHRISTUS Spohn officials say a number of foundations, individuals, businesses and Mother-Baby committee members helped make the renovations possible for the benefit of South Texas families.

“Moms can feel very confident that Spohn South is prepared to welcome our littlest patients on their biggest day,” said Mark Casanova, president and chief operating officer of Spohn South.

The renovations to the Mother-Baby Unit are expected to be complete by the summer of 2019.
