The high school sports season is officially over.
But coming up in just a few short weeks, believe it or not, volleyball practice starts the latter part of the summer.
And over at Ray High School, they have a new head coach.
She is Lauren Bell and if that name sounds familiar, it’s because she has served as the CCISD’s only female boys’ varsity basketball assistant coach.
Now, she adds head volleyball coach to her resume after already spending five years with the Ray volleyball program.
Bell is very excited about her added role at ray and we caught up with her at her volleyball camp where she spoke about the future of volleyball here in South Texas that looks very bright.
“We have a lot of clubs growing and the club scene has been growing a lot in South Texas the past five to 10 years,” she said. “So these girls have been able to get the fundamental skills earlier in elementary schools versus waiting until they get to seventh grade where they are just now learning to compete.
“They now get two years in middle school and we now expect them to do these skills in the high school level. So, having that foundation with clinics available and camps like we are doing today gives these girls a better understanding.”
That preparation results in a more finished player by they get to high school, she said.
“When they get to high school, they know how to pass, serve and set,” Bell said. “We can start to put those pieces together and jell as a program more.”
It appears like she is ready to go. We wish Lauren and her Lady Texans the very best.
She will do great there.
