Aransas County has a new place for bird watchers and nature lovers to enjoy.

Today the ribbon was cut on a pavilion at the Connie Hagar Cottage Sanctuary in Rockport. The structure provides a shaded area to enjoy the sanctuary, which encompasses more than six acres.

The land was the original site of the Rockport Cottages owned by Jack and Connie Hagar. Connie was an iconic figure in the Texas bird-watching movement.

“They came here in the 1930s and Connie Hagar recorded over 211 species here in Rockport,” said Pam Stranahan of the Friends of Connie Hagar. “She really made a big difference as far as the reputation for Rockport as an area to come for birding.”

Among the species found at the sanctuary include neo-tropical migrants and birds native to the area.
