A national survey has found that employees in Corpus Christi far outwork most others across the nation.

The personal-finance website WalletHub released its report on 2019’s Hardest-Working Cities in America.

In order to determine where Americans work the hardest, WalletHub compared the 116 largest cities across 10 key metrics. The data set ranges from employment rate to average hours worked per week to share of workers with multiple jobs.

In the complete study based on all of the metrics, Corpus Christi ranks 13th nationally among the nation’s hardest-working cities. Among Texas cities, it ranks fifth, trailing Irving (third nationally), Plano (fifth), Austin (eighth) and Dallas (11th).

It appears to reinforce a well-heeled work ethic that is a part of the Texas culture as well-worn boots and chicken-fried steak and cream gravy.

Among specific metrics, here is how hard Corpus Christi works:

How Hard Does Corpus Christi Work? (1=Best, 58=Avg.)

  • 2nd nationally – Avg. Workweek Hours
  • 51st –  Share of Households Where No Adults Work
  • 44th – Avg. Leisure Time Spent per Day

With today beingNational Employee Appreciation Day and Americans outworking many of their foreign peers by hundreds of extra hours per year, it would be a fitting day to honor the American work ethic.

And a good place to start appears to be right here in Corpus Christi.
