This Friday, a little sweat will go a long way toward helping local children who are in foster care.

A World for Children (AWFC) is a faith based, non-profit foster care agency serving abused and neglected children across the state, from birth to 21 years. The Corpus Christi branch has been open since 2003 and last year, served approximately 75 foster children and 31 foster families in Nueces and surrounding counties.

When children enter the care of AWFC, they come from the worst possible circumstances. They have been neglected and abused by the people they should have been able to count on to protect them — their parents. AWFC works with foster parents and community donors to ensure that they can just enjoy being a kid again.

A variety of summer camps and adventures will be available for these children in the months ahead, and proceeds will be raised through donations and special events, like Friday’s Zumba Master Class. It takes place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the gym of the First Baptist Church (3115 Ocean Drive).

For a $15 donation, those who attend will have access to instructors from Alice, Corpus Christi, Kingsville, Portland and San Antonio. There will also be various vendors on site, as well as raffles and prizes.

This summer, AWFC is putting together a trip for all foster/adoptive families to Six Flags Fiesta Texas, at a cost of $60 per child.

Most of the children they serve have never been out of the town in which they were born, much less stayed at a hotel or visited an amusement park. Some have never even been in a swimming pool. During this trip, siblings that were separated for placement can come back together and enjoy the day with one another. In past years, Fiesta Texas has done well in providing extras  to ensure that each child receives a meal voucher, game voucher, souvenir cup and shirt.
