UPDATE: Firefighters declared the fire as being under control at around 6 p.m.
Local fire departments are working a large brush fire on Corpus Christi's west side.
The fire broke out in the 3100 block of County Road 35, off Saratoga Boulevard between Greenwood Drive and Old Brownsville Road.
Corpus Christi Fire Department crews, along with the Annaville Volunteer Department and Nueces Co. Emergency Services District No. 1 and 2 currently are battling the fire. It hasn't been contained at this time.
Heavy smoke is being reported in the area, and a portion of Saratoga Boulevard has been blocked near Las Colonias.
The cause of the fire currently is unknown.
Fifteen to 20 acres have been claimed so far. Firefighters told Scripps Media homes and businesses in the area are not currently in danger because wind is blowing flames away from those structures.
