KINGSVILLE, Texas — Firefighters in Kingsville were battling a fire in the old Kleberg Co. hospital Monday.

The fire started around 11 a.m as thick, black smoke could be seen coming out of the building.

According to the Kingsville fire chief, obstacles inside the building made accessing the fire difficult.

"Unfortunately ... we haven't started our investigation so we really don't know how the fire started," Kingsville Fire Chief Adrian Garcia said. "All we can tell you at this point is that the fire is actually inside the building, and it's been very difficult to get to at this point."

Surrounding communities were called to assist the local fire crews.

"As soon as we got enough manpower, we have been working on trying to get to ... the room of origin from different locations," Garcia said. "We're getting there. It's a slow process."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

"Once we do get the fire under control, then we'll definitely get our fire marshal out here to begin the investigation," he said.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
